Apartheid: 1948-1994
Apartheid means "the state of being apart" in Afrikaans.
Apartheid was a system of racial segregation in South Africa enforced through legislation from 1948-1994.
This meant that people were separated according to the colour of their skin.
The purpose of apartheid was to keep political and economic power amongst people of European descent.
In 1990, South Africa had a population of 40 million.
35 million people were native Africans, while the remaining 5 million were of European descent.
Despite this, the white population had political, economic and social control.
It is important to remember that discrimination against black South Africans took place long
before 1948 and still continues today.
